Choosing the right coffee machine

System = available capsule range

The capsule system determines the range you will have access to throughout the machine's lifetime. First choose the coffee brand you like (Lavazza, Delta, illy…), then the matching machine: not the other way round.

Home vs professional

Home (household, 1–4 cups/day): compact machine, heats up in 30–60 seconds, 0,5–1 L tank. Professional (office, Ho.Re.Ca., 20 or more cups/day): continuous heating, 2–4 L tank, counter, reinforced boiler.

Pressure & extraction

9 bar = Italian espresso standard. 15 bar = peak pressure at start-up (helps pierce the capsule). 19 bar = Nespresso® Original. Iperespresso illy = patented system with 3 phases, variable pressure for hyperinfusion followed by crema emulsification.

Maintenance & durability

Descale every 3 to 6 months depending on your water hardness (limescale). Rinse the circuit after each use. A well-maintained capsule machine lasts 5 to 10 years. Invest in a Brita filter or mineral water with a low mineral content to extend its lifespan.

Capsule machine or bean-to-cup machine: which should you choose?

Both have their advantages:

  • Capsules: maximum simplicity (preset dosing, no brew group maintenance, ready in 30 seconds). Higher cost per cup. Ideal for a household with varied tastes, offices, gifts and hotels.
  • Coffee beans + grinder: maximum freshness (ground on demand, aromas preserved), lower cost per cup. More demanding maintenance (brew group cleaning, grind adjustment). Ideal for coffee enthusiasts and heavy coffee drinkers (5 or more cups/day).

Cafemalin offers both options: coffee beans for automatic bean-to-cup machines, and capsules for all capsule machines.

How do you descale your capsule coffee machine?

Descaling is essential to maintain extraction quality and extend the machine's lifespan. Recommended frequency:

  • Very hard water (the north, the east, Île-de-France): every 2 to 3 months.
  • Moderately hard water: every 4 to 6 months.
  • Soft water (the west, Brittany): every 6 to 8 months.

Standard procedure: (1) pour the descaler into the tank with water, (2) run a cycle without a capsule to rinse the circuit, (3) repeat with clean water 2–3 times. Use the descaler recommended by the manufacturer (Lavazza, Delta, illy) or a universal descaler suitable for aluminium.

Tip: fit a Brita filter or use mineral water with a low mineral content to halve the frequency of descaling.

Can a Lavazza Blue machine use A Modo Mio capsules?

No. Each Lavazza system is proprietary and closed: capsules are not interchangeable between the 4 Lavazza systems:

  • A Modo Mio — the home system, launched in 2007 (see the A Modo Mio range).
  • Blue (LB) — the office system, launched in 2003 (see the Blue range).
  • Espresso Point (EP) — Lavazza's first system, launched in 1989 for offices and catering (see the Espresso Point range).
  • Firma — a system for workplaces (see the Firma range).

Before buying, check your machine's system — it is usually shown on a label on the back or underneath the machine, as well as in the manufacturer's instructions.

Is a capsule machine cost-effective compared with a filter coffee maker or a bean-to-cup machine?

This depends on daily consumption and the purchase price. A rough guide over 3 years, based on 2 espressos per day (around 2 200 cups):

  • Filter coffee machine + ground coffee: the lowest initial investment, with a low cost per cup (0,27 € using Lavazza Italiano Classico 250 g in a moka pot).
  • Automatic bean-to-cup machine + coffee beans: a higher machine purchase price, but the lowest cost per cup (0,14 € using Crema e Aroma Expert 1 kg, 0,13 € with a 6 kg pack).
  • Capsule machine (Lavazza AMM, Delta Q): an affordable machine (192,60 € for the Idola, 55,20 € for the Mini Qool), but a higher cost per cup (0,39 € using A Modo Mio Passionale, 0,48 € using Delta Q Qalidus), which has the greatest impact over 3 years.
  • Professional espresso machine + coffee beans: the highest initial investment, with the same cost per cup as coffee made from beans.

A capsule machine costs more to run over time, but offers: (1) maximum simplicity, (2) low initial investment, (3) consistency cup after cup, (4) no brew group maintenance. An excellent choice for a household drinking 1–4 cups/day or an office.
