The Delta Cafés adventure began in 1961 in Campo Maior , a small village in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal, when Manuel Rui Azinhais Nabeiro —a visionary 30-year-old entrepreneur—established his first roastery in the back room of the Nabeiro family grocery store. His ambition: to offer the Portuguese high- quality, artisanal coffee at a fair price , roasted using the traditional slow method that preserves the aromas. This vision would permanently transform the coffee industry in Portugal.
From the 1970s and 80sonwards, Delta Cafés became the benchmark for Portuguese café owners and restaurateurs. Development accelerated with the industrialization of roasting at Campo Maior, the creation of signature blends (Gold, Platinum), and then internationalization in the 1990s. In 2007, Delta launched Delta Q, its proprietary capsule system – a technological gamble that established the brand in the premium home coffee segment.
Today, Delta Cafés has been the leading roasted coffee brand in Portugal for over twenty years, with a presence in more than 40 countries . The Nabeiro-Novadelta Group —still 100% family-owned—employs over 4,000 people and embodies a unique model of social capitalism : commitment to the development of Campo Maior, training for producers, fair trade (partners in Timor , Angola , and Brazil ), and social projects financed by the company. Delta has been the No. 1 Trusted Coffee Brand in Portugal for 20 consecutive years.
What has defined Delta since 1961: 4 pillars of expertise which explain the No. 1 position in Portugal and the international reach.
Signature Delta since 1961: traditional slow roasting in Campo Maior, which preserves the essential oils of the bean and develops complex, balanced aromas. Each blend is roasted in a dedicated batch to guarantee consistency in the cup.
Delta blends (Gold, Platinum, Gran Espresso) define modern Portuguese coffee: a balanced Arabica/Robusta, a generous body, notes of chocolate and dried fruit, and a dense crema. Global bestseller: Delta Gold 1 kg (21,000+ Cafemalin).
Delta Q (2007) — proprietary closed system of recyclable aluminum capsules, box of 10 capsules, 7 g dosage. Dedicated blends (Aroma, Deliciozzo, Qualidad, Elegantte, Decaqafeinato). Compact machines (Milk Qool, Naïa, Cottage) designed for home use.
Delta Foundation — sustainable coffee farming programs in Timor, Angola, and Brazil; training for producers. Sourcing progressively towards Rainforest Alliance certification . Social capitalism: Delta funds schools, infrastructure, and social projects in Campo Maior.

Delta Cafés was founded in 1961 in Campo Maior (Alentejo, Portugal) by Manuel Rui Azinhais Nabeiro, a 30-year-old entrepreneur, in the back room of the Nabeiro. His vision: to offer the Portuguese artisanal quality coffee at a fair price, roasted using the traditional slow method. Delta has over 60 years of uninterrupted history and remains a family business —the Nabeiro-Novadelta Group (4,000+ employees).
Delta is roasted in Portugal, at the historic Campo Maior (Alentejo). The green beans are sourced from more than 15 producing countries — mainly Brazil, Timor, Angola, Colombia, Ethiopia, Honduras — often through direct fair trade via the Delta Foundation.
The roasting follows Rui Nabeiro's signature slow method , which preserves the essential oils and develops the crema . Each blend is roasted in a dedicated batch to guarantee consistency in the cup. Packaged in a protective atmosphere with a one-way valve.
These are the two signature blends in the Delta whole bean coffee range, with distinct positioning:
Delta Gold — our absolute best-seller with over 21,000 customers. A balanced blend of Arabica and Robusta coffees made using traditional Portuguese methods, medium+ roast, intensity 8/10, with notes of chocolate, dried fruit, and toast. A generous body and dense crema. Affordably priced (€24.50 per kilo).
Delta Platinum — premium selection . Predominantly Arabica blend , gently and expertly roasted, intensity 7/10 , with subtle notes of flowers, red fruit, and dark cocoa. Elegant body. Price: €25.91 per kilo.
Our recommendation : Gold for everyday use (Portuguese tradition), Platinum for tasting. See the entire Delta whole bean coffee.
Delta Q is the proprietary capsule system launched by Delta Cafés in 2007.Each capsule is made of recyclable aluminum, contains 7g of coffee and works exclusively with dedicated Delta Q machines (Milk Qool, Naïa, Cottage…).
Delta Q blends available at Cafemalin : Aroma (balanced, traditional), Deliciozzo (mild, fruity), Qualidad (intense), Elegantte (refined), Decaqafeinato (decaffeinated). Boxes of 10 capsules. Unit price €0.48 per cup (Qalidus).

Yes. Delta markets several socially responsible products:
More broadly, the Delta Foundation manages direct fair trade programs with partner producers in Timor , Angola , and Brazil , including training, school funding, and infrastructure development. Delta has received several awards for its social capitalism (Superbrands Portugal, Sustainability Award).
The choice depends on your equipment and your intended use :
In terms of pure cup quality, freshly ground coffee beans remain superior. However, in terms of convenience and consistency, Delta Q capsules win.
