Frequently Asked Questions
Are these 4 oz cups suitable for my espresso?
Yes, absolutely. The 4 oz (12 cl) is the international standard for espresso adopted by the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association). This capacity covers:
- Strict espresso (ristretto 20 mL, espresso 30-40 mL) — the cup has 3× the volume of the coffee, optimal visual margin.
- Long espresso (60-80 mL) — European standard dose.
- Short coffee (100 mL) — fill to 3/4 of the cup.
For a long coffee (150-200 mL) or a cappuccino/latte, choose the 6.5 oz (200 mL). For a latte macchiato or a large mug, choose the 8 oz (240 mL).
Are Cafemalin cups compostable or recyclable?
cardboard cups Cafemalin are made of food-grade cardboard with a thin inner coating for leak-proof protection (necessary for contact with hot beverages). The end-of-life disposal process depends on the type of coating (PE polyethylene / PLA plant-based / cellulose):
- Official recommendation in France — throw in the household waste bin (not in the cardboard recycling bin) because of the plastic coating which makes sorting complex for recyclers.
- Recycling guidelines have been extended — some areas (Paris, Lyon, Grenoble) now accept cups made from recycled materials in a dedicated recycling stream. Check your local council's guidelines at consignesdetri.fr.
- Industrial composting — possible if PLA (plant-based bioplastic) coating. Check with the supplier.
Good practice : If you produce a lot of used cups (office/event), contact a specialized cup recycling program (Cyclosource, GoodPlanet). Sustainable alternative: the reusable porcelain cup (see our Lavazza porcelain espresso cups).
Is it suitable for hot and cold drinks?
Yes, for hot drinks (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, up to ~90°C without any problem for 20-30 minutes). The food-grade cardboard and inner lining withstand these temperatures and prevent coffee from seeping through.
For cold drinks — this standard size is also suitable for immediate consumption. However, for very cold liquids with ice cubes (soda, iced coffee, iced tea), the cardboard may soften more quickly (approximately 30-45 minutes). For extended use in cold drinks, opt for a dedicated plastic cup (clear PP) or a glass cup.
Is a pack of 50 enough for an office?
Estimates based on office size and usage:
- Office 10 people — 20 cups/day (2 coffees/person): ~2-3 days.
- Office 30 people — 60 cups/day: ~1 day.
- Office 50+ people or heavy use — order in cartons of 20-30 packs in advance.
- Home/occasional use event — 50 cups cover an event of 20-30 people.
For regular use in an average office, we recommend stocking 3-5 packs to avoid running out. See the complete accessories category for multi-quantity packs and professional quotes.
Can the cups be personalized with a company logo?
Yes — price upon request based on volume. Cafemalin offers company logo customization on cardboard cups starting from approximately 5,000 cups (10 cartons). Available techniques:
- 1 colour printing (dark monochrome logo) — MOQ 5,000, lead time 3-4 weeks.
- 4-color four-color printing (complex logo, photographic image) — MOQ 10,000, lead time 4-6 weeks.
