Usage & Compatibility
Volume 70 mL : SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) standard for a single Italian espresso. The cup should have a total capacity of approximately 70 mL to hold a 30-40 mL espresso with good visual clearance — the cup should never be filled to the brim to allow for stirring with a spoon and to let the crema breathe.
Fine porcelain plays a major sensory role:
- Balanced thermal conductivity — maintains the optimal serving temperature (~60-65 °C in the cup after extraction), without cooling too quickly like glass or burning the drink like thick ceramic.
- Matte white color — allows you to visually appreciate the color of the crema (hazelnut gold = successful extraction, white = under-extraction, black = over-extraction).
- Taste neutrality — porcelain does not release any chemical compounds or alter the aromas of coffee, unlike some plastics or metals.
- High-temperature cooking robustness — baked at 1300-1400 °C, resists moderate thermal shock and repeated dishwasher cycles (~2000 cycles).
Set of 12 cups — ideal quantity for:
- Office/restaurant — self-service simultaneous operation of 12 espressos without having to wash.
- Amateur home that receives — dinners, family events (12 cups = 6 couples).
- Liberal practice (lawyer, medical) — premium service to the client between 2 appointments.
Purchase the set of 12 dedicated saucers to complete the service (generic saucers may leave the cup unstable).
Compatibility: All espresso machines · Dedicated Lavazza 70ml saucers

Frequently Asked Questions
Why 70 mL exactly?
70 mL is the official SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) standard for a single Italian espresso. The espresso itself is 30-40 mL, but the cup should have a larger total capacity for several reasons:
- Let the aromas breathe — the crema needs room to develop visually and olfactorily. An overfilled cup smothers the volatile aromatic notes.
- Facilitating spoon stirring — for stirring sugar or mixing a light cappuccino cup, you need room without overflowing.
- Aesthetic visual margin — the cup never filled to the brim signals a careful professional service (as opposed to "coffee that overflows" which is considered low quality).
- Thermal grip comfort — the air gap above the coffee limits heat conduction to the handle (more comfortable grip).
This is the international standard for baristas and Italian bars. All large espresso cups (illy, Lavazza, Bialetti, ACF) follow this 70 mL standard.
Which saucers is it compatible with?
This set includes only the cups (12), without saucers. For a complete and aesthetically consistent set, add the Lavazza porcelain saucers (70 ml) with a set of 12.
Why dedicated saucers? — Lavazza saucers are calibrated to the dimensions of 70 mL cups (central indentation, side rim for the spoon, matching porcelain thickness). Generic saucers can:
- The cup will be unstable if the central indentation is not adapted to the diameter of the cup base (⌀ 5.5 cm here).
- Not providing space for the spoon (bad service experience).
- Create a visual imbalance — two porcelains with different finishes/whiteness.
Are they dishwasher safe?
Yes — high-fired porcelain (1300-1400 °C) designed to withstand repeated dishwasher cycles (min. 2000 cycles according to European standard EN 12875). Recommendations for preserving maximum shine :
- Standard cycle 65°C — avoid intensive cycles of 75-80°C which accelerate the wear of the porcelain.
- Mild detergent without aggressive bleaching agents — an excellent professional HORECA detergent is sufficient (avoid chlorinated gels).
- Avoid thermal shock — do not plunge a hot cup into cold water and vice versa (risk of micro-cracks in the long term).
- Natural drying or microfiber towel — preserves the handle and prevents limescale stains (if very hard water, add a rinsing liquid).
Is there a cappuccino format?
Yes — Lavazza Cappuccino Cups 160 mL set of 6 for milk-based drinks (150 mL cappuccino, latte macchiato, café crème, hot chocolate). 160 mL standard Italian cappuccino volume, same fine high-fired porcelain finish as official Lavazza.
For the complete service, also plan for: set of 6 dedicated cappuccino saucers (see accessories category).

The intellectual property rights to the design (curves, proportions, 70ml dimensions) belong to Lavazza. The cups are sold outside the Lavazza direct network through authorized distributors such as Cafemalin.
