Illy's philosophy is unique in the coffee industry: a single blend —but what a blend!—composed of nine select Arabica origins (Brazil, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Colombia, India, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras), blended to create a balanced, aromatic, and refined profile , with notes of chocolate, caramel, flowers, and fruit . The roast is light to medium , in the Triestine tradition (contrasting with the darker Neapolitan style, such as Kimbo).
The Iperespresso system (launched in 2007) is a patented, proprietary capsule with a unique two-stage double emulsion technology . Water is first forced in under pressure to create an emulsion, then the espresso is extracted by gentle percolation through a special filter—the result is an espresso with a dense, persistent, and smooth crema , richer than standard systems. The blend is identical across the entire Illy range (Iperespresso, beans, ground, ESE capsules, etc.) — only the roast (Classico, Intenso, Forte, Decaf) varies slightly. This is the Illy signature : the same quality, everywhere, worldwide.
Both contain exactly the same Illy 100% Arabica blend. The difference lies in the format and the intended use :
Iperespresso Classico 18 caps — household, box of 18 capsules. Cost per cup: €0.49. Standard size for typical home use.
Iperespresso Professional 30 capsules — Ho.Re.Ca., box of 30 capsules. Unit cost of €0.56 per cup (larger capsule). Reinforced packaging for intensive use in restaurants, offices, and hotels.
Iperespresso Classico 90 caps — economical office, box of 90 capsules. Unit cost of €0.49 per cup. Ideal for medium to heavy coffee drinkers.
Our advice : 18 caps for testing or occasional use, 90 caps for a household with high consumption, Professional 30 caps for Ho.Re.Ca. or intensive use.
Almost identical. Illy uses a Water Process decaffeination method that preserves all the aromas of the original blend. The coffee is decaffeinated before roasting, which avoids the aromatic alterations produced by chemical decaffeination (with dichloromethane).
The result: an espresso with the same balanced profile as the Classico — notes of chocolate, caramel, flowers, and fruit — but without caffeine (less than 0.1%). A slightly lighter body than the Classico, a slightly less dense crema, but the aromatic profile remains very close to l'ororiginal.
This is the ideal choice for espresso lovers who want to enjoy a coffee in the evening without affecting their sleep, or for pregnant/breastfeeding women who wish to retain the pleasure of espresso.
