Illy Nespresso-compatible capsules in 90 seconds

illy was founded in Trieste in 1933 by Francesco Illy. Its coffee is based on a single 100% Arabica blend of nine Arabica coffees, available in three roasts: Classico, Intenso and Forte. The brand is present in more than 140 countries.

The compatible capsules use this blend in the Nespresso Original format, in aluminium. illy notes an exception: they are not suitable for U, Umilk, Expert, Expert&Milk, Prodigio and Prodigio&Milk models purchased after 25 July 2016. illy is not affiliated with the Nespresso brand.

Cafemalin offers two coffees from the range. Espresso Classico, illy's mildest roast: mild and velvety, with notes of caramel, orange blossom and jasmine, and a sweet aftertaste (intensity 5/9, 25 to 40 ml in the cup), in a box of 10 (4,45 €) or a pack of 10 boxes (43,15 €). Lungo Intenso, rich and full-bodied: notes of cocoa and dried fruit, with a hint of bitterness (intensity 7/9, 110 ml cup), in a box of 10. For illy's own system, see illy Iperespresso capsules.

What is the difference between illy Nespresso-compatible capsules and illy Iperespresso?

These are two illy ranges for two systems:

  • illy Nespresso-compatible capsules (this page) — aluminium capsules in the Nespresso Original format, for machines using this system.
  • illy Iperespresso — illy's own capsules, for illy Iperespresso machines only. Extraction takes place in two stages: infusion under pressure inside the capsule, followed by emulsification through its valve, which forms the crema.

If you have a Nespresso Original machine, choose the compatible range.

Do illy capsules work with Nespresso Vertuo?

No. They are designed for the Nespresso Original system (Essenza, Inissia, Pixie, CitiZ, Creatista, Lattissima…). Vertuo machines use a different capsule format, identified by a barcode: Original capsules cannot be used in them.

Which illy Nespresso-compatible capsule should you try first?

For an espresso, choose Espresso Classico: illy's mildest roast (intensity 5/9), with notes of caramel, orange blossom and jasmine. For a fuller-bodied lungo, choose Lungo Intenso (intensity 7/9), with notes of cocoa and dried fruit, to be prepared as a 110 ml cup.

Why choose illy Nespresso-compatible capsules?

Three key points provided by illy:

  • 100% Arabica — no Robusta.
  • A blend of nine Arabica coffees — from South America, Central America, Africa and India, the same across all roasts.
  • Described flavour profiles — caramel, orange blossom and jasmine for Classico; cocoa and dried fruit for Intenso.

Are these illy capsules recyclable?

The capsule is made of aluminium. Empty out the grounds, which can be composted, then sort the capsule according to your local council's instructions: since 2023, all packaging in France must be sorted for recycling (Citeo).

How much coffee does a capsule contain?

A box of 10 capsules contains 57 g of ground coffee, or approximately 5,7 g per capsule (illy). One capsule makes one cup: illy recommends 25 to 40 ml for Espresso Classico and a 110 ml cup for Lungo Intenso.
