Lavazza ground coffee in 90 seconds

Lavazza — founded in 1895 in Turin by Luigi Lavazza — is the iconic roaster of the Northern Italian espresso tradition. l'orspecializing in the over-the-counter sale of whole bean coffee, the company expanded its catalog throughout the 20th century to include ground coffee , with one goal: to offer the same Lavazza quality to households without a grinder or espresso machine, for preparing authentic coffee in an Italian coffee maker (moka pot) or an electric filter coffee maker.

Lavazza's flagship ground coffee is the Italiano Classico blend : medium roast, balanced Arabica-Robusta blend (60% Arabica from Brazil and Central America + 40% Robusta for body and crema), intensity 5/10 , smooth and slightly chocolatey notes with controlled acidity. It's the "safe" blend of classic Italian coffee—accessible, consistent, and enjoyable for everyday drinking. Standard size: 250g bag for €9.50 .

The Italiano Classico grind is optimized for:

  • Italian coffee maker (Bialetti moka pot) — medium-fine grind, extraction ~2-3 minutes over low heat. Yield ~35 moka cups per 250g bag.
  • Electric filter coffee maker — medium grind, percolation extraction. Yield ~50 filter cups per 250g bag (7g/cup).

Note : The Italiano Classico grind is not optimal for espresso machines with grinders (grind too coarse, likely resulting in under-extraction). For espresso, Lavazza coffee beans , ground just before extraction (maximum freshness + grinder calibration specific to each machine). A press can work but requires a coarser grind—in this case, choose a coarse-grind blend.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions our customers ask most often.

Does Lavazza ground coffee work in an espresso machine with a grinder?

Not recommended. The 250g Italiano Classico ground is medium-fine, optimized for Italian moka pots and filter coffee makers. This grind is too coarse for a grinder-type espresso machine, resulting in under-extraction : a light espresso, without crema, and with little body.

For an espresso machine, choose Lavazza coffee beans , ground just before extraction — freshness and grinder calibration are essential for a successful espresso.

How to prepare coffee in an Italian coffee maker (Bialetti moka pot)?

Preparing homemade espresso in a Bialetti moka pot using ground Italiano Classico coffee:

  1. Fill the water reservoir (lower chamber) up to the safety valve (~150-250 ml depending on mocha size)
  2. To measure the ground coffee in the filter holder: fill it without tamping (~15-25 g depending on the moka pot size: 3/6/9 cups)
  3. Screw the upper compartment firmly onto the tank
  4. Place over low heat — avoid high heat which will burn the coffee. Brew for approximately 2-3 minutes until the characteristic "glug-glug" sound indicates the end of extraction.
  5. Remove from heat immediately as soon as the gurgling begins to subside.
  6. Serve immediately — ideally in espresso cups for an authentic experience.
How many cups can be made with a 250g bag?

Approximate yield depending on preparation:

  • Mocha 3 cups — dose ~7 g per extraction ⇒ ~35 uses per 250 g sachet
  • Mocha 6 cups — dose ~15 g per extraction ⇒ ~16 uses per sachet
  • Electric filter coffee maker — dose ~7 g per cup ⇒ ~35-50 cups depending on cup size
What is the difference between ground coffee and Lavazza whole bean coffee?

coffee beans offer:

  • Maximum freshness — grinding just before extraction preserves the aromatic oils (shelf life ~15 minutes after grinding)
  • Precise calibration — grind adjustable according to machine (fine for espresso, medium for filter, coarse for French Press)
  • Larger Lavazza Palette — Super Crema, Gold Selection, Qualità Rossa, Qualità Oro, Crema e Aroma, ¡Tierra! Organic, etc. (see Lavazza grain range)

Ground coffee is more convenient for households without a grinder and perfect for Italian or electric filter coffee makers , but it loses its aromatic freshness after opening. Consume within 2 weeks of opening.

How to store Lavazza ground coffee?

Optimal preservation of ground coffee:

  • Before opening : tightly sealed bag, shelf life ~18 months when stored away from heat and light (dry cupboard)
  • After opening : reseal tightly (using the zip-lock bag or airtight container), and consume within 2-3 weeks to preserve the flavor. Avoid refrigerating (humidity) and freezing (condensation).
  • Ideal : opaque airtight container, dry cupboard, room temperature 18-22°C
