Kimbo —founded in Naples in 1963 by the three Rubino brothers—is today one of the three major historic Italian brands (along with Lavazza and Illy), and specifically embodies the Neapolitan espresso tradition : predominantly Robusta blends, medium to dark roast, dense crema, pronounced notes of dark cocoa, blond tobacco, and sweet spices . The brand has developed a range dedicated to the Nescafé Dolce Gusto system to reach consumers with Krups/De'Longhi machines who wish to experience authentic Neapolitan espresso.

The Dolce Gusto Kimbo range offers 3 blends in boxes of 16 capsules (Kimbo DG signature format, ~€5.45 per box, or ~ €0.34/cup): Barista 100% Arabica (exclusive Arabica blend — an exception in the Kimbo range — a balanced long coffee with notes of dried fruit and roasted cereals), Intenso (a strong Neapolitan signature espresso, dense body and persistent crema, notes of dark cocoa), Napoli (deeper roast, marked notes of burnt wood and intense cocoa — the most full-bodied in the range).

The Dolce Gusto is proprietary (approximately53 mm in diameter, plastic + aluminum foil) and not interchangeable with other systems (Nespresso 26 mm, A Modo Mio 27 mm). Kimbo capsules strictly adhere to Dolce Gusto dimensions and are compatible with all machines equipped with this system: Piccolo, Genio, Movenza, Infinissima, Colors, Mini Me, and others.

The capsules are partially recyclable : the plastic body goes in the yellow bin, and the grounds go in home compost. The official Nescafé Dolce Gusto brand launched a collection and sorting program in 2021 (point). Is Kimbo Barista 100% Arabica in Dolce Gusto different from Nespresso?

Same blend, different capsule format. Kimbo uses the same 100% Arabica blend (signature Barista recipe) for its Nespresso Original and Dolce Gusto ranges. The difference lies in:

  • Capsule format : 26 mm aluminum for Nespresso Original vs. ~53 mm plastic + aluminum film for Dolce Gusto
  • The coffee dose : ~5-6 g Nespresso vs ~7-8 g Dolce Gusto
  • Extraction volumes : Nespresso espresso 25-40 ml vs. Dolce Gusto espresso/lungo (variable depending on button press duration)
