Coffee machine filters in 90 seconds

Two types of filters are essential to properly equip a professional or high-end automatic coffee machine. Each serves a different technical purpose:

  • Anti-limescale water filters — Brita Purity. Founded in 1966 in Germany, Brita is the global benchmark in professional water filtration. The Purity range covers Ho.Re.Ca. and industrial machines: Purity C150 Quell ST (72 €) — medium-capacity cartridge for coffee machines in medium-volume bars/restaurants; Purity C500 Finest (162 €) — high-capacity cartridge for high-turnover professional coffee machines, cafés and hotels, and canteens. These filters remove limescale, reduce heavy metals, balance the water's pH and extend the espresso machine's lifespan by several years.
  • Filters for coffee quality — Lavazza Aqua Aroma Crema. Organolithic filter specifically for Lavazza Blue (19,62 €) — compatible with the LB300 Classy Mini, LB900 and LB1050 machines. This filter fits in the machine's water tank and improves the coffee's crema and aroma during extraction. It does not replace a professional anti-scale filter such as Brita — it is an accessory for optimising flavour.

Your choice of filter depends on the type of machine and the water hardness in your area:

  1. Very hard water (> 25 °TH) — professional machines: a Brita Purity C150 filter is required. High volume (> 100 cups/day): Brita C500 Finest.
  2. Lavazza Blue LB300/LB900/LB1050 machine — Lavazza Aqua Aroma Crema filter recommended as an accessory (improves crema). Does not replace an anti-scale filter if the water is very hard.
  3. High-end bean-to-cup espresso machines — Brita Purity C150 (moderate use) or C500 (intensive Ho.Re.Ca. use).

The average service life of a Brita Purity C150 cartridge is around 3 000 to 5 000 litres of filtered water (6 to 12 months depending on volume), and up to 10 000 to 20 000 litres for the C500 Finest (12 to 24 months). The Lavazza Aqua Aroma Crema filter should be replaced approximately every 2 months, depending on use.

An anti-scale water filter for a professional coffee machine offers four key benefits:

What is the difference between Brita Purity C150 and C500?

The two Brita Purity cartridges are designed for different volumes and uses:

  • Brita Purity C150 Quell ST (72 €) — medium-capacity cartridge. Filtration capacity: 3 000 to 5 000 litres (~500 to 800 cups of espresso/day for 6 to 12 months). Ideal for: bars, brasseries, medium-volume restaurants and offices with a professional machine. Quell ST formula: balanced water for coffee (captures limescale, preserves minerals essential to flavour).
  • Brita Purity C500 Finest (162 €) — high-capacity cartridge. Capacity: 10 000 to 20 000 litres (~1 500 to 3 000 cups of espresso/day for 12 to 24 months). Ideal for: high-turnover cafés and hotels, canteens, institutional catering and industrial automatic coffee machines. Finest formula: finer filtration, optimal results for speciality espresso.

The filtration cost per cup is around one cent for both cartridges; the C500 becomes more economical from around 50–70 cups/day.

When should I replace my Brita Purity cartridge?

The service life of a Brita Purity cartridge depends on the volume filtered and water hardness. Technical guidelines:

  • C150 Quell ST — replace every 3 000 to 5 000 litres filtered or every 6 to 12 months, whichever comes first.
  • C500 Finest — replace every 10 000 to 20 000 litres filtered or every 12 to 24 months.

In practice, most high-end professional espresso machines have a filtered water volume meter or a filter life indicator. Consult your machine's manual or enable monitoring via a Brita filter head with a built-in meter.

Which machines is the Lavazza Aqua Aroma Crema filter compatible with?

The Filtre Aqua Aroma Crema Lavazza (19,62 €) is compatible with the following professional Lavazza Blue machines:

  • Lavazza Blue LB300 Classy Mini — compact Blue capsule machine for offices
  • Lavazza Blue LB900 — medium-sized Blue capsule machine for offices/small restaurants
  • Lavazza Blue LB1050 — high-capacity Blue capsule machine for professional use/vending

It fits in the machine's water tank and improves the flavour quality of the espresso (denser crema, preserved aroma). Please note: this filter is not a professional anti-scale filter. For full protection against limescale, add a Brita Purity cartridge upstream if your water is hard (> 25 °TH).

How can I tell if the water in my area is hard?

Water hardness is measured in °TH (French degrees of water hardness). Guidelines:

  • Soft — 0 to 15 °TH · Western France, Brittany, Massif Central. Filter optional.
  • Moderately hard — 15 to 25 °TH · Most regions. Filter recommended for professional machines.
  • Hard — 25 to 35 °TH · North-eastern France, Île-de-France, Paris region, Paris Basin. Filter required for professional machines.
  • Very hard — > 35 °TH · Some municipalities in south-eastern and northern France. Brita C500 Finest filter recommended.

Check your municipality's water quality report on your regional health agency's (ARS) website or at solidarites-sante.gouv.fr.

Delivery and returns for filter cartridges?

All orders placed before 16 h on a working day are dispatched the same day, with delivery generally within 24 to 48 hours in mainland France. At checkout, you can choose delivery to a pick-up point, home delivery, express delivery before 13 h, or collection from the shop in Sarcelles. The estimated delivery date is shown on each product page, and tracking details are emailed to you as soon as your order is dispatched.

Brita Purity cartridges and Lavazza filters are shipped in their original sealed packaging. Unopened cartridges (with the seal intact) can be returned within 14 days, in accordance with our terms and conditions of sale.
