Features
Usage & Compatibility
Standard size 11 cm long — optimized for most containers: 4 oz (12 cl), 6.5 oz (200 mL), and 8 oz (240 mL) cups, espresso cups, cappuccino cups, and coffee glasses. Made of untreated natural European birch, with no chemical additives, varnish, or stain. Food contact compliant with European standard EC 1935/2004.
Single use only — the stirrer is not designed for reuse (hygiene risk + mechanical fragility of the wood after use). Dispose of in home compost after use — untreated birch wood decomposes in 2-4 months in aerobic compost.
An alternative to the AGEC law has been mandatory since 2020 : the anti-waste law no. 2020-105 of February 10, 2020 (known as the "AGEC law") prohibits the sale of single-use plastic stirrers in France since January 1, 2020 (decree 2019-1451). Wooden stirrers are the mandatory replacement for all establishments serving coffee—offices, restaurants, cafeterias, vending machines, and event venues. Failure to comply results in financial penalties for the establishment and increased inspections by the DGCCRF (French Directorate General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control).
Typical use cases :
- Office (coffee machine break room) — stirrer container next to the sugar.
- Fast food / takeaway — espresso/long coffee served in a cup.
- Automatic distribution / vending — agitator display integrated into the dispenser.
- Events / seminars — fast and eco-friendly coffee service.
- Company/hospital cafeteria — large volume, hygiene + eco.
Compatibility: Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, all brands of hot drinks · Compatible with 4/6.5/8 oz paper cups + mugs

Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose a wooden stirrer over plastic stirrers?
Three decisive reasons since 2020:
- French law – mandatory ban – single-use plastic stirrers have been banned from sale in France since January 1, 2020 (AGEC anti-waste law no. 2020-105 of February 10, 2020, decree 2019-1451). Wooden stirrers are the mandatory replacement for all establishments serving coffee. Financial penalties for non-compliance and DGCCRF inspections apply.
- Naturally biodegradable — untreated birch wood decomposes in 2-4 months in home compost. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose and pollutes the oceans (microplastics).
- Neutral in taste — birch does not release any chemical compounds into hot coffee, unlike some older plastics (bisphenol A, phthalates, PFAS) which can migrate into hot drinks.
Bonus: more premium visual appearance for well-appointed establishments (specialty cafes, organic shops, premium coworking spaces) — wood signals an eco-friendly commitment.
Is a length of 11 cm suitable for all cups?
Yes, for the vast majority of coffee containers :
- Paper cups — 4 oz (12 cl, H 6 cm), 6.5 oz (200 mL, H 10 cm), 8 oz (240 mL, H 12 cm). The 11 cm stirrer extends far enough for easy gripping.
- Espresso cups — 70-90 mL (H 6 cm): the length of 11 cm is ideal.
- Cappuccino cups / large cups — 160-200 mL (H 8-10 cm): length 11 cm perfectly suited.
- Coffee glasses — 12-15 cm glass: good.
For very tall mugs (40 cl or more, 15+ cm high), choose a 15-18 cm if available from our B2B service. For standard office/restaurant coffee use, the 11 cm length covers 95% of needs.
Is the birch wood treated or varnished?
No — 100% untreated raw wood. No varnish, no stain, no chemical preservatives, no chlorine bleaching. Suitable for food contact according to European standard EC 1935/2004.
European forest origin : birch wood sourced primarily from Scandinavia (Finland, Sweden, Estonia) and Eastern Europe (Poland, Lithuania), traditional areas for high-quality birch production. Traceability of sustainable forest management — some batches may be FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).
How long do 1000 stirrers last?
Estimates based on usage:
- Office for 10 people — 15 coffees/day: ~2 months.
- Office 30 people — 45 coffees/day: ~22 days.
- Restaurant 100 coffees/day : ~10 days.
- Automatic distribution — office 50 people, 80 coffees/day: ~12 days.
A pack of 1000 is the standard economy size for regular use. For more intensive use (restaurant chains, company cafeterias with 500+ people), order in multi-box cartons for volume discounts.
How to dispose of used agitators — which channel?
Three eco-friendly options:
- Home composting (recommended) — untreated birch wood decomposes in 2-4 months in aerobic compost. Ideal if you have a composter at the office (CSR framework) or at home.
- Green waste bin — if your municipality offers this sorting (Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Nantes) or if your company has a bio-waste collection contract (mandatory since 2024 for large producers +5 tonnes/year).
- Household waste bin — the default solution. Wood still degrades in the medium term in landfill (unlike plastic, which persists for centuries).
To be avoided : paper/cardboard sorting — the agitators are too small and cause problems for sorting centers (disposal to household waste downstream anyway).
Can the stirrers be customized with a company logo?
Yes — price upon request for volume discounts. Cafemalin offers custom company logo laser engraving on wood starting from approximately 20,000 stirrers (20 cartons). Durable, clean engraving, no ink required. Ideal for corporate events, seminars, and coffee shop chains. Contact our B2B department for a personalized quote.
