illy Iperespresso Classico is the signature expression of the illy blend — the benchmark for premium Italian coffee since 1933 (illy was founded in Trieste by Francesco Illy). The Classico blend combines 9 Arabica origins carefully selected by Ernesto Illy in the 1980s (Central America, South America including Brazil, Ethiopia, and India) according to a secret recipe.
Classico Roast : This is the balanced medium roast that built illy's reputation— neither too light (preserving the crema and body) nor too dark (preserving the aromatic finesse of 100% Arabica). The result in the cup: a balanced and well-roundedwith notes of milk chocolate, blond caramel, white flowers, and a light touch of toasted nuts on the finish. Gentle acidity and very light bitterness —the illy signature for those who appreciate a coffee that is clear, harmonious, and without any harsh edges.
Iperespresso System : illy's patented dual-phase extraction —a first high-pressure phase to develop aromas, a second low-pressure phase to create an exceptionally dense and persistent. Visual result: the Iperespresso crema lasts for more than 2 minutes on the espresso, something difficult to achieve with other capsule systems.

What exactly is the "Iperespresso" system?
This is the proprietary illy dual-phase extraction system , patented and unique on the market. Unlike standard systems (Nespresso, Lavazza AMM) which use a single extraction phase, Iperespresso operates in two sequential stages :
- Phase 1 (high pressure) — hot water is injected at very high pressure to emulsify the oils and develop the aromas.
- Phase 2 (low pressure) — controlled release which creates an exceptionally dense and persistent crema.
The result: a crema that lasts for more than 2 minutes, more intense aromas, and a velvety texture in the mouth. It's one of the capsule systems that best reproduces the espresso of a professional percolator.
What is the difference between this version and the Iperespresso Intenso or Decaf version?
illy offers three roasting options for its Iperespresso blend:
- Classico (this ref.) — balanced medium roast, chocolate/caramel/floral notes. illy's best-selling signature blend.
- Intenso — darker roast, fuller body, notes of bitter cocoa and toasted wood. For lovers of strong espresso.
- Decaffeinated (18 caps or 90 caps) — same water-processed Arabica decaf blend, medium roast.
The Arabica blend remains the same — only the roasting time changes .
Composition of the 90 capsules pack?
The pack contains 6 boxes of 15 illy Iperespresso Classico capsules, for a total of 90 capsules. Each box is sealed in an inert atmosphere to preserve freshness until the indicated best before date (typically 24 months).
Are the capsules recyclable?
illy Iperespresso capsules are made of polypropylene (PP) polymer — recyclable in the yellow recycling bin after emptying the grounds. illy also offers its Sustainability illy recycling program . The coffee grounds can be composted separately (an excellent compost activator).
Is there a pro version for intensive office use?
Yes — illy Iperespresso Pro Classico Lungo 30 capsules , which is the professional designed for X9 pro machines and high-traffic offices. The capsule format is slightly different (compatible only with Iperespresso Pro machines).
