- illy Iperespresso Home mode only — illy specific filter holder, proprietary double chamber capsule.

What's the difference with the other X1 Anniversary colors?
The illy X1 Anniversary is available in 3 main colors:
- Stainless steel (this product) — premium brushed silver, traditional Italian bar style or industrial/workshop design. The most visually versatile.
- Black — an intense, contemporary color that highlights Luca Trazzi's signature curved lines. 44mm ESE pod configuration.
- Red — illy's signature red color , the embodiment of passionate Italian coffee.
Depending on the edition and the filter holder installed by illy, each color may be configured differently. We recommend checking the configuration with Cafemalin customer service before purchasing.
Design by Luca Trazzi 1994 — why is this important?
Luca Trazzi is an Italian designer born in 1962 in Verona, trained at the Politecnico di Milano. In 1994, he designed the X1 machine —a home espresso machine that broke with the utilitarian conventions of the time. His design choices:
- With its curved and massive silhouette — the X1 resembles a small train or a miniature steam locomotive, going against the grain of utilitarian cubic machines.
- Chassis in lacquered sheet metal or stainless steel — noble materials, feeling of a manufactured object, substantial weight (5-6 kg).
- Signature lever handle — a nod to historic 1950s bar espresso machines.
- Architectural details — integrated tray, cup lighting, round buttons, total visual consistency.
The X1 has been exhibited in several design museums (MoMA New York, Triennale di Milano) and has become a classic of Italian industrial design. The Anniversary celebrates this heritage by making it available to the public once again.
How do I prepare an espresso with the X1?
The practice is simple and ritualistic :
- Heat the machine — ~1 min to reach extraction temperature (~92 °C).
- Place the ESE pod or Iperespresso capsule — in the appropriate filter holder (44 mm for ESE, illy format for Iperespresso).
- Lock the filter holder — quarter turn, traditional espresso bar signature gesture X1.
- Start extraction — dedicated button, continuous flow ~25-30 seconds for a 30 mL espresso.
- Remove and dispose of the pod/capsule — in the compost for ESE paper pods, in the recycling bin for Iperespresso capsules.
Result : authentic Italian espresso with dense crema (thanks to the 15 bars of pressure) and signature gesture ritual.
What maintenance is required for the stainless steel finish?
Brushed stainless steel requires simple but specific maintenance :
- Daily cleaning — damp microfiber cloth in the direction of the brushing motion (following the directional grain). Avoid circular motions which could create streaks.
- Fingerprints — the brushed finish is naturally resistant (unlike mirror-finish stainless steel). A simple wipe with a microfiber cloth is all it takes.
- Prohibited products — scouring sponges, steel wool, bleach, chlorinated products (risk of corrosion of the 304 or 316 stainless steel used). Do not use pure vinegar or lemon for extended periods.
- Recommended product — dedicated stainless steel cleaner in spray form or food-grade oil (drop onto a soft cloth, wipe off the excess). Makes stainless steel fingerprint -resistant.
- Descaling — every 3-6 months depending on local water hardness, official illy or universal descaling kit.
What is illy caffè?
illy caffè is an Italian coffee roaster based in Trieste (Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Northeast Italy), founded in 1933 by Francesco Illy. Renowned for its 100% Arabica blend composed of nine select origins, illy is present in over 140 countries and supplies most of the world's leading hotels and high-end restaurants. The brand invented the Iperespresso capsule in 1996 and regularly collaborates with renowned Italian designers (Luca Trazzi for the X1, Francis Kéré for the Art Collection editions, etc.). The Illy family still owns the company (Andrea Illy is president).
