illy Classico Lungo is illy's signature 100% Arabica blend from 9 origins, offered in a dedicated lungo capsule —that is, calibrated for a 100-120 mL extraction rather than a 40 mL espresso. The difference between an espresso capsule and a lungo capsule isn't just the machine's button: the internal coffee dose is slightly increased, and the grind size is adjusted to ensure a balanced long extraction. A simple "long" espresso (using the lungo button on an espresso capsule) becomes diluted and acidic —the Classico Lungo capsule is designed for a truly aromatic and well-rounded lungo. It's a classic medium roast from Trieste. In the cup: light to medium body, pronounced sweetness , dominant notes of caramel , hazelnut , and white flowers . Difference between espresso capsules and lungo capsules?
The Nespresso lungo capsule is not simply an espresso capsule that you extend by pressing the lungo button. Two precise settings are adjusted at the factory:
- Dose of coffee — slightly increased to compensate for the extra water (110 mL vs 40 mL) and avoid aromatic dilution.
- Grind size — adjusted to be coarser to slow down extraction over a longer time (~40-45 s vs ~25 s espresso). A simply longer espresso grind over-extracts and produces a bitter and acidic.
The result: a truly balanced, round and aromatic, not a diluted espresso.
Classico Lungo vs Lungo Intenso illy: difference?
Two illy Nespresso compatible capsules, both calibrated for 100-120 mL lungo, with the same 9 origin Arabica blend, but different roasts:
- Classico Lungo (this ref.) — intensity 5/10, classic medium roast, notes of caramel, hazelnut, and white flowers. The smooth everyday lungo.
- Lungo Intenso — intensity 8/10, dark roast, notes of dark chocolate and spices. The full-bodied lungo.
Recommendation: Classico for a round morning/afternoon coffee, Lungo Intenso for those who want a coffee with a strong character.
Compatible with Nespresso Vertuo?
No — only Nespresso® Original. The Classico Lungo capsule adheres to the standard round shape of Nespresso Original. Vertuo uses a different system (larger capsules with barcodes) which is incompatible.
How many cups and how long does it take to operate?
10 lungo per box. 2-cup/day household = ~5 days, 4-cup/day household = ~2-3 days. Typical illy compact size — for regular use, plan on having several boxes.
