Flavour profile
Gran Espresso is a blend from Lavazza's professional range, intended for those who enjoy a bold flavour: a full-bodied, balanced profile and rich crema. It combines Arabica from Central America with Robusta from South Asia, predominantly Robusta, with a medium roast. In the cup: notes of cocoa and black pepper, distinct bitterness and a full body, whether in a short espresso or a cappuccino. The opposite of the milder Gold Selection.

Frequently asked questions
What do Lavazza Gran Espresso coffee beans taste like?
Lavazza describes it as a full-bodied, bold coffee with a balanced profile, notes of cocoa and black pepper, and rich crema. It blends Arabica from Central America with Robusta from South Asia, with a medium roast, and is designed for espresso: bean-to-cup, portafilter or commercial espresso machines.
For a milder espresso, see Gold Selection (honey and nuts) or Super Crema (honey and hazelnut).
Is Gran Espresso suitable for home use or strictly for professionals?
Gran Espresso is part of Lavazza's professional range (bars, restaurants, offices), but it is also suitable for home use if you enjoy full-bodied espresso:
- Choose it if you like very full-bodied Italian espresso, such as Kimbo Extra Cream or Bristot Classico Intenso.
- Avoid it if you prefer a smooth, mild espresso: choose Super Crema (honey and hazelnut notes) or Gold Selection (pronounced sweetness).
Why does Gran Espresso have such thick crema?
Espresso crema forms from the carbon dioxide released by freshly ground coffee, and Robusta produces thicker, longer-lasting crema than Arabica. As Gran Espresso is predominantly Robusta, it delivers:
- Dense, lasting crema.
- A full body, with a dense mouthfeel.
- More pronounced bitterness: if you do not like bitterness, choose Gold Selection.
Does Gran Espresso contain more caffeine than other Lavazza blends?
Generally, yes. Robusta contains around twice as much caffeine as Arabica (roughly 2% of the bean compared with 1% to 1,5%). A predominantly Robusta espresso such as Gran Espresso therefore contains more caffeine than a predominantly Arabica blend. The caffeine content of a cup depends mainly on the dose and extraction time.
How many cups can I make with a 1 kg bag?
Standard yield: ~143 cups at 7 g per cup (short Italian-style espresso), or ~111 cups at 9 g (standard espresso). A bar serving 100 espressos a day uses around 700 g of coffee daily: the 20 kg professional pack means less frequent ordering.
