Taste Profile
Gran Espresso is the Lavazza that best embodies the Italian espresso tradition: full-bodied, rich, and with a long finish, designed for the quick extractions of Italian bars where coffee is enjoyed standing at the counter. It's an Arabica-Robusta —with a higher proportion of Robusta than in Super Crema, giving it the signature body and strength of this blend.
Darker than the Turin average roast — the Italian school of medium-dark roasting develops notes of dark chocolate, sweet spices (cinnamon, white pepper) and toasted nutty notes . The acidity is very low, the bitterness is present but balanced, the finish is long and enveloping .
In the cup, Gran Espresso reveals a powerful and masculine : a direct attack of chocolate notes, a very dense body that fills the entire mouth, and an abundant dark brown crema that visually contrasts with the white cup. It's the preferred blend of baristas who want authentic Italian espresso —the kind you find in a neighborhood bar in Rome or Milan.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the 20kg Gran Espresso and the 30kg format?
The blend, the Arabica-Robusta composition , the medium-dark Italian roast, and the cup notes (dark chocolate, spices, roasted) are exactly the same . The only difference is the packaging format— 20 x 1 kg bags vs. 30 x 1 kg bags . Choose according to your volume.
- Gran Espresso 20 kg (this ref.) — Medium CHR, autonomy 1-2 months.
- Gran Espresso 30 kg — High volume CHR, autonomy 2-3 months.
Gran Espresso vs Super Crema — how to choose?
These are the two signature Lavazza CHR blends, with distinct positioning:
- Gran Espresso (this reference) — fuller-bodied, darker roast, intensity 8/10, notes of dark chocolate and spices. The true classic Italian espresso. Best as a short espresso, less versatile in milk-based drinks.
- Super Crema 20 kg — milder, medium roast, intensity 6/10, notes of honey and almond. A versatile blend that's excellent in espresso as well as milk-based drinks (cappuccino, latte).
Choose Gran Espresso if your customers demand a strong, long-lasting Italian espresso. Super Crema if you're looking for versatility.
Who exactly is this 20kg pack intended for?
Target audience: Average hotel, restaurant, and catering (HORECA) customer who enjoys intense Italian espresso .
- Neighborhood Italian bar/café — clientele who enjoy strong espresso at the counter.
- Italian restaurant / trattoria — consistency with the cuisine (end-of-meal coffee).
- 3-4 star hotel — lounge, room service espresso.
- Company cafeteria for 50-100 employees — clientele who like strong coffee.
Estimated yield ~2,857 espressos at standard 7g dose.
Compatible with milk-based drinks or only espresso?
Gran Espresso also works well in milk-based drinks, but its intense profile is best expressed in a short espresso or ristretto. In a cappuccino or latte, the dark chocolate and spice notes remain perceptible, but the bitterness may be more pronounced than with a milder blend. If your menu features many milk-based drinks, opt for Super Crema 20 kg (more versatile, with honey-almond notes that complement milk). On a menu primarily featuring espresso, Gran Espresso remains the benchmark choice for authentic Italian coffee.
How to store the 20 x 1kg bags to preserve freshness?
Each 1 kg bag is sealed under a protected atmosphere (nitrogen) and equipped with a degassing valve. As long as a bag remains unopened, it will keep until the indicated best before date (18-24 months). Store unopened bags at room temperature (18-22°C), away from light—do not refrigerate. Once a bag is opened, reseal it carefully or transfer the contents to an airtight, opaque container, and ideally consume within 3 to 4 weeks for optimal extraction.
