Taste Profile
illy Espresso Forte is illy's signature blend, available in a dark roast —the same blend of 9 Arabica origins as Espresso Classico (#33279), but roasted further to develop intense, full-bodied notes . illy's unique feature: offering a full-bodied espresso made with 100% Arabica beans , whereas most Italian full-bodied blends use 20-40% Robusta to achieve their characteristic body and bitterness. illy bypasses this approach by focusing on the roasting process : the 9 Arabica origins are selected to withstand a darker roast without becoming bitter or burnt, instead developing deep dark chocolate notes and a fine, full-bodied structure . In the cup: dense body , persistent dark hazelnut crema , dominant notes of dark chocolate , sweet spices (cinnamon, cardamom), and toast . The bitterness is pronounced but balanced by the finesse of the Arabica, with a lingering finish . The illy choice for those who prefer a full-bodied espresso without Robusta .

Frequently Asked Questions
Espresso Forte vs Espresso Classico: what's the difference?
Two illy blends compatible with Nespresso , using the same blend of 9 Arabica origins, but with different roasts:
- Espresso Classico — intensity 6/10, classic medium roast, notes of milk chocolate, caramel, and white flowers. The balanced illy signature blend.
- Espresso Forte (this ref.) — intensity 8/10, dark roast, notes of dark chocolate, spices, toast. A full-bodied version of the same blend.
Recommendation: Classico for all-terrain round use, Forte for full-bodied espresso (pure Arabica alternative to Italian Ristretto Arabica-Robusta blends).
How does illy make a full-bodied 100% Arabica blend? (without Robusta)
Through roasting. Most full-bodied Italian blends use 20-40% Robusta to achieve the characteristic intense body, dense crema, and robust bitterness—Robusta contains more caffeine, chlorogenic compounds, and body solids than Arabica. illy bypasses this approach by:
- Selecting Arabica origins that can withstand deeper roasting without becoming bitter or charred (Brazil Cerrado, Ethiopia Sidamo, Guatemala Antigua)
- Pushing the roasting further (dark, up to a moderate second crack) — develops notes of dark chocolate and spices
- Using its Coffee Lab in Trieste to continuously test aromatic stability
The result: a dense body and full-bodied notes characteristic of a traditional Italian espresso, while retaining the aromatic finesse of 100% Arabica. The bitterness is present but subtle, never harsh.
