Taste Profile
Carte Noire is the leading French coffee brand — created in 1978 by the Dutch group Douwe Egberts (now Jacobs Douwe Egberts), then acquired by Lavazza in July 2016 to strengthen the Italian group's presence in the French market. Its historical positioning: " The Art of French Coffee ," symbolized by the famous black cup and its connection to the world of cinema.
The Professional range is the Ho.Re.Ca./office version of the brand, made with whole beans. The Aromatic variant is composed of 100% multi-origin Arabica—medium roasted to reveal the natural aromatic finesse of high-altitude beans, without the bitterness or strength of a blend with Robusta. Positioned for roundness and balance —with a French taste, less full-bodied than Italian blends.
In the cup: a smooth and mellow attack with notes of ripe fruit (stewed red berries, baked apple), a balanced medium body supported by a floral touch (white blossom, light jasmine), and a sweet finish with notes of smooth cocoa . A signature French coffee — ideal after a meal, with pastries, or for a relaxing coffee and reading moment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Carte Noire Aromatic vs Balanced — how to choose?
Two Ho.Re.Ca. Carte Noire references with distinct profiles:
- Aromatic (this ref.) — 100% Arabica, aromatic finesse, notes of ripe fruit / flowers / sweet cocoa. Intensity 6/10. Target: quality office, tea room, traditional restaurant.
- Balanced (#30189) — Arabica-Robusta blend, richer body and denser crema. Higher intensity. Target market: traditional bars, high-volume restaurants.
Choose Aromatic for finesse. Balanced for a fuller-bodied espresso and an Italianate.
Is Carte Noire a French or Italian brand?
Carte Noire is historically French —created in 1978 by the Dutch group Douwe Egberts specifically for the French market, with a 100% French identity and positioning (" The Art of French Coffee ," iconic cinema advertisements). In July 2016, the brand was acquired by the Italian group Lavazza —its French DNA and positioning are preserved, with roasting and supply chain integrated into the Lavazza group. The brand remains positioned in the French market as a smooth, rounded French alternative to the more robust Italian blends.
Who exactly is this 1 kg bag intended for?
Target: Quality office / tea room / traditional restaurant / 3-4 star hotel :
- Quality office — professional firms, agencies, small businesses looking for a mild, universally appreciated coffee.
- Tea room / brunch — pairing of French pastries and viennoiseries.
- Traditional restaurant — after-dinner café, varied French clientele.
- 3-4 star hotel — buffet breakfast, room.
- Amateur home machine — automatic, universal profile that appeals to everyone.
Compatible with milk and cappuccinos?
Decent, but not perfect . The 100% Arabica Aromatic blend is milder and less intense than a Robusta blend—it cuts through the heated milk without being crushed, but the result is still more subtle than a classic Italian espresso. Ideal for a mild French latte or a casual office cappuccino. For more expressive cappuccinos, the Balanced version (with Robusta) offers a more classic flavor. The 1 kg size allows you to offer both drinks without hesitation.
How to store the 1 kg bag to preserve its freshness?
The 1 kg bag is sealed in a protected atmosphere and equipped with a degassing valve . As long as the bag remains unopened , it will keep until the indicated best before date (18-24 months). Store it at room temperature (18-22°C), away from light—do not refrigerate. Once opened, reseal carefully or transfer to an airtight, opaque container , and ideally consume within 3 to 4 weeks . A 100% Arabica blend is particularly susceptible to oxidation—hence the recommendation to finish it quickly or divide it into two airtight bags.
