Taste Profile
Carte Noire Espresso N°7 Classique is the Nespresso® compatible capsule version of the historic Espresso Classique blend , the flagship reference of the Carte Noire since the 1990s. portfolio 100% Arabica , medium dark roast in the French style — darker than the European average but less than the Neapolitan school (Kimbo, Bristot) — to develop a full-bodied, balanced profile appreciated by lovers of intense coffee without excessive bitterness.
In the cup (40 mL espresso) : dense, medium hazelnut-colored crema , full body, signature notes of dark chocolate, sweet spices (cinnamon, cardamom) , and roasted nuts (hazelnut, almond). A pronounced but well-balanced bitterness, integrated acidity, and a lingering finish . This is the quintessential French espresso —rounder than an Italian ristretto, more intense than an Americano.
The Lavazza brand since 2016 : the acquisition of Carte Noire by the Lavazza group— finalized on February 29, 2016, for €700-750 million from Jacobs Douwe Egberts (previous owner Mondelēz International)—made Carte Noire the number one coffee brand in France for retail sales. Roasting remains in France, at thehistoric factory in Lavérune near Montpellier.

Difference with Carte Noire Espresso Lungo N°6?
The two Carte Noire Nespresso® compatible products offer two complementary espresso profiles:
- Classic Espresso No. 7 (this reference) — full-bodied and balanced, intensity 7/10, short extraction 40 mL. Notes of dark chocolate, spices, and roasted dried fruit. For lovers of Italian espresso with a French twist.
- Classic Espresso Lungo No. 6 — balanced and mild, intensity 6/10, long extraction 100-120 mL. Notes of yellow fruit, milk chocolate, and cereals. For lovers of a long French-style coffee (café with cream).
Choose according to your cup preference: strong espresso (No. 7) or lungo/long coffee (No. 6).
Is Carte Noire really French or Italian today?
Both — Carte Noire has officially been an Italian-French brand since February 29, 2016. Details:
- Originally a French brand — founded in 1978 by René Monnier, it passed through Jacobs Suchard (1982), Kraft Foods then Mondelēz, before being brought in 2015 to Jacobs Douwe Egberts (JDE), resulting from the merger of Mondelēz coffees and DE Master Blenders 1753.
- Acquisition by Lavazza in 2016 — the Italian group Lavazza (Turin, founded 1895) acquired Carte Noire for ~700 million euros from JDE, as part of a forced divestment by European competition authorities after the merger creating JDE.
- Roasting remains in France — the historic factory in Lavérune (Hérault, near Montpellier) continues to produce the entire retail range. The signature Carte Noire are preserved.
The result: preserved French expertise, capital and international strategy for Lavazza. Since 2016, Carte Noire has been the No. 1 coffee brand in France for retail.
Preparation recommendations?
40 mL espresso program (short press) on your Nespresso® machine — the 5.5 g capsule dose is calibrated for this volume. Extraction 25-30 seconds, machine temperature 90-92 °C, pressure 19 bar (Nespresso® Original standard).
For a ristretto (25 mL) — a short, personalized program is available on machines that offer this feature (Pixie, Prodigio, Lattissima). The Arabica blend then develops its maximum aromatic concentration, ideal at the end of a meal.
For a cappuccino/latte — the intensity 7 of the blend penetrates the milk correctly. On a Lattissima machine or with an external frother, pour the espresso first, then the hot frothed milk (1/3-2/3 ratio).
Avoid the lungo/long coffee program on this No. 7 espresso-optimized capsule. For a longer coffee, choose Carte Noire Espresso Lungo No. 6.
Recycling of aluminum capsules?
Capsules made from 100% recyclable aluminum. Three recycling streams:
- Yellow recycling (extended recycling guidelines) — most French municipalities now accept aluminum capsules in the yellow bin (Citeo, extended guidelines 2022+). Check with your local town hall.
- PointNespresso® collection — Nespresso® boutiques and some pointaccept aluminum capsules of all brands (Nespresso® recycling chain).
- store Cafemalin — we accept your used aluminum capsules as part of our recycling partnership.
Coffee grounds — the grounds must be separated (home compost or organic waste). Do not throw away the full capsule.
Is it more economical compared to official Nespresso® capsules?
Yes, generally less expensive per capsule than an official Nespresso® capsule from the proprietary brand, with equivalent aromatic quality. The Carte Noire N°7 blend is positioned to compete with Nespresso® Ristretto (intensity 10), Roma (intensity 8), and Livanto (intensity 6). It offers the best value for money for everyday home or office use.
