Usage & recommendations
Carte Noire Classique is the brand's historic signature: a balanced, without any overpowering bitterness or pronounced acidity, which the company offers in all its formats. In its instant version, the Arabica and Robusta delivers a full-bodied of coffee, with notes of chocolate and malted cereals, and a short but crisp finish. It's a coffee for everyday enjoyment in the best sense of the word: familiar, instantly recognizable, designed to be drunk without a second thought rather than analyzed. Its intensity is 6 out of 10 on the range's scale, with a medium roast —deliberately in the middle, to appeal to a wide audience.
What freeze-drying preserves, and what it doesn't. The coffee is extracted, then frozen and dehydrated under vacuum at low temperature, which retains a good portion of the volatile aromas—significantly better than hot drying. In the cup, you therefore find the profile of the range. What the process doesn't replicate, however, is the crema and complexity of a freshly extracted coffee : the coffee oils, responsible for the mouthfeel of an espresso, do not survive dehydration. The best guideline is therefore: excellent when the alternative is not to drink coffee, but inferior to a freshly extracted coffee.
The tip that makes the biggest difference to your cup : don't use boiling water. At 100°C, the instant chocolate releases a dry bitterness and a burnt note. Aiming for 90°C —water that has simmered and then been left to stand for a minute—is enough to dissolve the powder while preserving the chocolate notes.
Four ways to prepare it :
- Classic black coffee — 1 stick, 100 mL of water at ~90 °C, mix until completely dissolved. The standard preparation, ready in about twenty seconds.
- Long coffee — same dose, 150 to 180 mL of water. Longer and milder cup, reduced bitterness: the office mug format or the after-meal coffee.
- Coffee with milk — first dissolve the stick in a small amount of hot water (~30 mL), then top up with 120 to 150 mL of hot milk. Starting with the water prevents lumps. Works just as well with plant-based milk.
- Iced coffee — same principle: dissolve the powder in a very small amount of hot water, top up with cold water or milk, then add ice cubes. Pouring it directly onto ice would leave the powder suspended.
This is where the format makes all the difference. It's the format that needs nothing—no coffee maker, no machine, no capsules, no filters. A stick, a cup, hot water: it's the only offering in the catalog that allows you to make coffee where no equipment is available. Most frequent uses:
- Office and meeting room — a box in a drawer covers 80 cups without tying up the coffee machine, and without a queue before a meeting.
- Travel, train, hotel, camping — the stick fits in a pocket or a pouch. A kettle or a point hot water
- Troubleshooting at home — machine broken down, descaling, or simply out of capsules: the box can be kept for months without losing its dosage.
- Reception areas and small structures — each visitor opens their own dose, which meets hygiene requirements better than an open and shared jar of instant coffee.
Why individual dosing makes a difference : an opened container of instant powder absorbs moisture from the air each time it's opened, causing the powder to clump and making the cup taste bland. The stick is sealed until the moment of serving —the last cup in the box has the same profile as the first, and the dosage doesn't depend on the pourer's spoon.
Nutritional information : Plain instant coffee is virtually nutrient-free — 1 kcal per 100 g of powder, 0 g of fat and 0 g of sugar (label values). Any sugar or milk you add is therefore entirely up to you, unlike pre-sweetened instant coffee drinks such as powdered cappuccino.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many cups can you make with a box of 80 sticks?
80 cups, one per stick — the box contains 80 doses of 1.8 g, for 144 g of instant coffee. Serving size guidelines:
- 1 coffee per day — about 2 and a half months.
- 2 coffees a day — approximately 40 days.
- Office of 4 people, 1 coffee each — approximately 20 working days, or one month of work.
- Waiting room or reception area — depends on the number of people using it, but the sealed dose allows you to serve only what is consumed, without waste.
For significantly more intensive consumption, or to supply an automatic dispenser, the bulk format is more suitable: see instant coffee Carte Noire Classique professional 500g.
What is the difference with the professional 500g Carte Noire soluble powder?
Same brand and same Classic signature, two completely different uses :
- Box of 80 sticks (this reference) — individually sealed 1.8 g dose. No measuring required, no powder exposed to air, portable. For the office, travel, welcoming visitors, and home repairs.
- 500g box of bulk – dosing powder, approximately 250 cups. Designed to be poured into a vending machine silo or prepared in bulk, resulting in a lower cost per cup. For vending, catering, and hospitality.
The guideline is simple: if you are serving cups one by one, take the sticks; if you are feeding a machine or a continuous service, take the bulk.
What is the composition and intensity of this coffee?
A blend of Arabica and Robusta beans , and freeze-dried instant coffee as legally stated on the packaging. The Robusta provides body and body in the cup , while the Arabica contributes roundness and chocolatey notes—this balance defines the brand's Classic signature
Intensity 6/10 on the scale, with a medium roast : a straightforward coffee, neither sweet nor strong, deliberately positioned in the middle to suit the greatest number of people — which is exactly what you expect from a coffee shared in the office or offered to a visitor.
In terms of nutritional value, the powder is virtually neutral : 1 kcal per 100 g, 0 g of fat and 0 g of sugar. Always check the packaging for the complete list of ingredients and allergens.
Is a special machine or equipment required?
No, and that's the whole point of the format. All you need is a cup and hot water — nothing else. No coffee maker, no capsule holder, no filter, no descaling, no grounds to throw away.
Suitable hot water sources include a kettle, hot water dispenser, microwave, thermos, or tea machine hot water dispenser. The only precaution is the temperature : aim for around 90°C rather than barely boiled water. Water at 100°C will impart an unnecessary bitterness to instant coffee—letting the kettle sit for a minute after boiling is sufficient.
Don't confuse it with pods : a stick is neither a soft pod nor a capsule. It doesn't fit into any machine; its contents are poured directly into the cup. If you're looking for a machine-compatible format, see soft pods Carte Noire.
How are the sticks stored, and for how long?
Store in a dry place away from heat, as indicated on the packaging. No refrigeration required.
The advantage of individual packaging lies precisely in this: each stick is sealed until it's opened, so opening the box doesn't start any countdown. An opened container of instant coffee, on the other hand, absorbs ambient humidity with each use—the powder clumps and the cup gradually loses its flavor. Here, the last stick is in the same condition as the first.
This is what makes the format suitable for occasional use : a box kept in an office drawer, a travel bag, or a vacation home remains usable long after opening. Refer to the best-before date printed on the box.
