Kimbo was founded in 1963 in Naples when the Rubino —Francesco, Elio, and Gerardo—decided to create their own roastery after several generations of coffee merchants. Their ambition: to offer Neapolitans a homemade espresso that reproduced the quality and aromatic intensity of the coffee served in bars Neapolitan. In 60 years, Kimbo has become one of the three iconic brands of Italian coffee roasting (along with Lavazza and Illy), embodying the espresso tradition of Southern Italy.
The Kimbo signature blend is predominantly Robusta with select Arabica beans, medium to dark, dense and persistent crema, and pronounced notes of dark cocoa, blond tobacco, and sweet spices. It's the very definition of EspressoNapoletano : tight, intense, full-bodied, and rich—a world away from the milder 100% Arabica blends of Northern Italy. Some varieties (such as Barista 100% Arabica) offer a more modern interpretation with an exclusive Arabica blend for a slightly rounder profile.
The Nespresso Original Kimbo range offers three blends in a box of 30 aluminum capsules (approximately €8.53-9.48, or approximately€0.29-0.32 per cup): Barista 100% Arabica (a balanced, long coffee with mellow notes of dried fruit, our best-seller), Espresso Barista Ristretto (a tight, full-bodied coffee with a dense texture, the signature Naples blend), and Espresso Barista Napoli (a dark roast with intense cocoa and burnt wood notes, the most full-bodied). All three blends conform to theNespresso scale 1-13.
Please note: Nespresso Original capsules ONLY (Essenza, Inissia, Pixie, CitiZ, Creatista, Lattissima, etc.). NOT compatible with Nespresso Vertuo. Aluminum is recyclable through three channels in France: the Nespresso store drop-off program, metal recycling (yellow bin), or composting with metal . The questions our customers ask most often.
No. Kimbo Nespresso-compatible capsules are designed for the Nespresso Original system only. Nespresso Vertuo machines use a proprietary barcode and centrifugal system — no third-party Vertuo-compatible capsules exist (patents still active).
The three Kimbo blends compatible with Nespresso cover the Neapolitan spectrum from long to short and full-bodied :
Yes. The Barista 100% Arabica is an exception in the Kimbo range (usually Robusta dominant). Kimbo created this blend to offer a rounder, fruitier, less tannic profile to consumers who find traditional Neapolitan espresso too strong. It's a "modern" take on Neapolitan espresso that maintains Kimbo's roasting tradition but with an exclusive Arabica blend (as opposed to the Robusta dominance found in the other blends in the range).
Yes, Kimbo was founded in 1963 in Naples by the three Rubino brothers (Francesco, Elio, and Gerardo), and remains to this day a privately owned family business run by the second generation of Rubinos. The headquarters and main factory are still located in the Naples area. Kimbo is considered, along with Illy and Lavazza, one of the three "great" historic Italian brands, and specifically embodies the Neapolitan tradition of espresso.
