Taste Profile
Kimbo Espresso Barista Ristretto is the traditional Italian full-bodied blend from the Kimbo Barista range , compatible with Nespresso® Original machines. It's designed for those seeking an authentic Italian ristretto experience on their Nespresso machine, a departure from the predominantly mild 100% Arabica blends found on this system. This robust Arabica-Robusta blend (Arabica from Brazil and Colombia for the aromatic structure, Robusta from India and Vietnam for the body and signature Italian crema) is dark-roasted at Melito di Napoli according to the Parthenon school of coffee roasting. In the cup: a dense body, abundant dark hazelnut-colored crema , and dominant notes of dark chocolate , warm spices (cinnamon, cardamom, black pepper), and toast . The bitterness is pronounced yet balanced, with a lingering finish . Recommended extraction: a short 20-25 mL setting to concentrate the aromas and respect the Italian ristretto tradition—use the short program on your Nespresso machine. Also suitable for a strong 30-35 mL espresso for those who prefer a little more volume.

Frequently Asked Questions
Ristretto vs Barista Arabica vs Napoli: how to choose?
The three Kimbo blends compatible with Nespresso at Cafemalin, from the mildest to the strongest:
- Kimbo Barista 100% Arabica — intensity 6/10, refined mildness, mono-blend Arabica, medium roast, notes of milk chocolate and honey. A mild alternative to Kimbo.
- Kimbo Ristretto (this ref.) — intensity 9/10, traditional full-bodied, Arabica-Robusta blend, dark roast, for Italian ristretto 20-25 mL. Notes of dark chocolate and spices.
- Kimbo Napoli — intensity 10/10, the most full-bodied Neapolitan dark roast, Arabica-Robusta blend with a Robusta dominance, dark roast in the traditional Naples style. Notes of deep dark chocolate and warm spices.
Recommendation: Ristretto for the traditional full-bodied Italian, Napoli for the authentic Neapolitan dark roast, Barista for the finesse of Arabica.
What exactly is an Italian ristretto?
Ristretto (Italian word for "restricted") is an espresso that is even more concentrated than standard espresso:
- Standard espresso — 25-30 mL, extraction 25-30 s, ratio ~1:2 (7 g coffee → 15 g liquid).
- Ristretto — 20-25 mL, extraction 15-20 s, ratio ~1:1 (7 g coffee → 7 g liquid). Maximum of aromas, very dense body.
Italian tradition — ristretto is served at the counter in a small, thick cup to retain heat, and enjoyed in 2-3 sips. Kimbo Ristretto is specifically calibrated for this extraction method on Nespresso machines: a 5.5g dose, slightly lower than Barista (concentration ratio), and a dark roast to compensate for the short extraction.
Compatible with Nespresso Vertuo?
No — only Nespresso® Original. Kimbo Ristretto capsules adhere to the standard round geometry of Nespresso Original — compatible with Essenza Mini, Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, Lattissima, Creatista, and Prodigio. Vertuo (Next, Plus, Pop) uses a different system (larger capsule, centrifugal extraction) which is incompatible.
What is the exact composition of the Ristretto blend?
A signature Neapolitan Arabica-Robusta blend — the exact proportions are not disclosed by Kimbo (trade secret), but the typical Ristretto approach among Italian roasters combines:
- Arabica from Brazil and Colombia — sweetness and aromatic structure (chocolate notes)
- Robusta from India and Vietnam — full-bodied, dense crema, toasty notes
- Typically 50-60% Arabica + 40-50% Robusta for a full-bodied Italian Ristretto blend
Dark roast at Melito di Napoli according to the Partenopean school — more pronounced than on Barista to develop the dark chocolate and spice notes.
How many cups and how long does it take to operate?
30 espressos per box. Household consumption: 2 cups/day = ~15 days, heavy household consumption: 4 cups/day = ~7-8 days. Ristretto consumption is generally lower than that of a long espresso because the drink is more concentrated in caffeine per mL (but the total amount of caffeine is similar to a 40 mL espresso).
Best before end date and recycling?
Best before date 12-18 months, store at room temperature away from light. Aluminum capsules 100% recyclable via selective sorting of metal packaging, Nespresso Recycling program, or Terracycle.
