Carte Noire is an iconic French coffee brand , founded in 1978 , and over the decades has become one of the leading Arabica coffee brands in France. The brand's signature is its 100% Arabica positioning —a choice of beans that are milder, more aromatic, and more acidic than the classic Italian Arabica-Robusta blend. The result in the cup: a well-rounded, balanced coffee with notes of dried fruit and roasted grains , highly appreciated for everyday home use.
The soft pod Carte Noire range offers the 100% Arabica blend in 3 intensity profiles :
Soft pods — also known as ESE (Easy Serving Espresso)—are a standardized format, 44 mm in diameter , containing 7 g of ground coffee wrapped in biodegradable filter paper . Unlike aluminum or plastic capsules, soft pods have no rigid packaging : they are naturally compostable (grounds + filter paper) and leave a much smaller environmental footprint . They are the preferred choice for consumers concerned about the environmental impact of single-use capsules.
Machine compatibility soft pods Carte Noire are compatible with all machines with 44mm ESE pod holders : filter coffee makers with a pod adapter (Krups, Melitta, Cuisinart, etc.), professional espresso machines with an integrated pod holder (Delonghi, La Pavoni, Ariete, etc.), and Senseo machines with an ESE adapter (note: Senseo has a different format; an adapter is required). They are not compatible with hard capsule machines (Nespresso, Dolce Gusto, Lavazza Blue/AMM/EP/Firma, Delta Q).
Carte Noire intensity scale from 1 (mild) to 10 (intense). Here are our 3 100% Arabica blends:

An ESE (Easy Serving Espresso) soft pod is a standardized European coffee pod format created in the 1990s to standardize the pre-dosed coffee market:
The ESE format is open and non-proprietary : unlike Nespresso, Dolce Gusto or Lavazza capsules, soft pods can be manufactured by any brand and are interchangeable between all machines with 44 mm ESE pod holders.
All machines with 44 mm ESE pod holders :
Attention : machines with rigid capsules (Nespresso Original/Vertuo, Dolce Gusto, Lavazza Blue/AMM/EP/Firma, Delta Q) are not compatible with ESE soft capsules — the capsule holder is of different dimensions.
Yes, that's their main advantage over rigid capsules :
It is the preferred choice for consumers sensitive to theenvironmental impact of single-use coffee.
Two main differences:
The choice depends on your taste: if you like a strong, intense Italian , opt for aluminum capsules (Lavazza Maestro, Carte Noire espresso milder, filteredsoft pods Carte Noire are an excellent choice.
Soft pods have a shorter expiration date than aluminum capsules — filter paper is less impermeable to oxygen and moisture than aluminum:
For regular use, opt for a compact (5-10 pods or 20 pods) rather than large stocks — freshness is better.
Currently, our selection of 44mm ESE soft pods is led by the Carte Noire. We regularly expand the range according to customer demand — other brands also carry this format (Illy, Lavazza, Segafredo…).
