Frequently asked questions
Are these 4 oz cups suitable for my espresso?
Yes, perfectly. The 4 oz (12 cl) size is the international standard for espresso adopted by the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association). This capacity accommodates:
- Short espresso (ristretto 20 ml, espresso 30–40 ml) — the cup holds 3 times the volume of the coffee, leaving an optimal amount of visible space above it.
- Lungo (60–80 ml) — standard European serving.
- Short coffee (100 ml) — fills 3/4 of the cup.
For a 150–200 ml lungo or a cappuccino/latte, choose the 6.5 oz (200 ml) size. For a latte macchiato or large mug of coffee, choose the 8 oz (240 ml) size.
Are Cafemalin cups compostable or recyclable?
Cafemalin paper cups are made from food-grade paperboard with a thin inner lining to make them watertight (necessary for contact with hot drinks). The disposal route depends on the type of lining (PE polyethylene / plant-based PLA / cellulose):
- Official recommendation in France — dispose of them in the regular general household waste bin (not with cardboard recycling) because the plastic lining makes sorting complex for recyclers.
- Extended recycling guidelines — some areas (Paris, Lyon, Grenoble) now accept composite cups through a dedicated recycling stream. Check your local council's guidelines at consignesdetri.fr.
- Industrial composting — possible with a PLA lining (plant-based bioplastic). Check with the supplier.
Good practice: if you generate a large number of used cups (office/event), contact a specialist cup recycling service (Cyclosource, GoodPlanet). A sustainable alternative: a reusable porcelain cup (see our Lavazza porcelain espresso cups).
Is it suitable for hot and cold drinks?
Yes, for hot drinks (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, up to ~90 °C without any problems for 20–30 minutes). The food-grade paperboard and inner lining withstand these temperatures and prevent coffee from seeping through.
For cold drinks — this standard size is also suitable for immediate consumption. However, with very cold liquids and ice cubes (fizzy drinks, iced coffee, iced tea), the paperboard may soften more quickly (~30–45 minutes). For prolonged use with cold drinks, choose a dedicated plastic cup (clear PP) or a glass.
Is a pack of 50 enough for an office?
Estimates based on office size and usage:
- Office with 10 people — 20 cups/day (2 coffees/person): ~2–3 days.
- Office with 30 people — 60 cups/day: ~1 day.
- Office with 50 or more people, or heavy use — order cartons of 20–30 packs in advance.
- Household / occasional event use — 50 cups cover an event for 20–30 people.
For regular use in a medium-sized office, keep 3–5 packs in stock to avoid running out. See the full accessories category for multipacks and business quotes.
Can the cups be customised with a company logo?
Yes — bulk orders quoted on request. Cafemalin offers custom printing with your company logo on paper cups for orders starting at ~5 000 cups (10 cartons). Available printing methods:
- Printing in 1 colour (dark monochrome logo) — minimum order quantity 5 000, lead time 3–4 weeks.
- Full-colour process printing in 4 colours (complex logo, photographic image) — minimum order quantity 10 000, lead time 4–6 weeks.
