Ingredients:
(for 1 cup of approximately 250 ml)
- 1 espresso (approximately 30 ml, freshly prepared)
- 200 ml of fresh whole milk (or plant-based milk such as oat or soy)
- Optional: sugar, flavored syrup (vanilla, caramel, hazelnut…)
Required equipment:
- Espresso machine (or Italian coffee maker/Moka)
- Stainless steel pitcher (for frothing milk)
- Steam wand, electric milk frother or small manual whisk
- Latte cup or tall cup (approximately 250 to 300 ml)
Detailed steps:
Preparing the espresso
- Preheat your cup by pouring a little hot water into it (this will keep your coffee warm for longer). Discard the water just before pouring the espresso.
- Prepare a quality espresso (approximately 30 ml), ideally with a correctly adjusted espresso machine. Otherwise, use an Italian coffee maker.
Preparing the milk foam
- Pour fresh cold milk into the stainless steel pitcher, filling it to 2/3 (do not overfill to leave space for the foam).
- Use the steam nozzle of your espresso machine or an electric milk frother:
- With steam nozzle:
- Place the nozzle slightly below the surface of the milk.
- Turn on the steam while slightly tilting the pitcher to create a gentle whirlpool. You should hear a slight hissing sound, indicating that air is being incorporated into the milk.
- When the milk reaches about 60 à 65°C (warm to the touch but not burning), stop the steam.
- Tap the pitcher on the table to eliminate large bubbles and gently swirl it to homogenize the foam.
- With electric frother or manual whisk:
- Heat the milk to around 60-65°C in a saucepan or in the microwave.
- Then dip your frother or whisk into the hot milk and froth until you get a creamy and smooth foam.
- With steam nozzle:

Assembling the Latte
- Gently pour your hot espresso into the cup.
- Tilt the cup slightly and then slowly pour the frothed hot milk, first aiming for the center of the cup, then gradually bringing the pitcher closer to the surface to finish with a beautiful creamy foam on top.
- If you feel creative, create a small latte art design!
Tips & tricks for a perfect Latte:
- Use freshly ground coffee for the espresso to preserve the aromas.
- Prefer whole milk for a richer and creamier foam. If you choose plant-based milk, oat or soy produce the best froth.
- For a flavorful latte, add a little flavored syrup to your cup before pouring the coffee.
