In practical terms: approximately 2-5 mg of caffeine per cup versus 60-80 mg for a regular caffeinated espresso—a reduction of approximately 95%. This residual amount is considered negligible for most people, including pregnant women and those sensitive to caffeine.

Lavazza uses the water extraction (often called the Swiss Water Process or an equivalent variant) — the green beans are steeped in hot water, which extracts the caffeine, then filtered through activated carbon, which retains the caffeine while allowing the aromatic compounds to pass through. The flavor-enriched water is then reabsorbed by the decaffeinated beans. No chemical solvents (dichloromethane, ethyl acetate) are used — a natural and safe that preserves the original aromas of the coffee.

No — Lavazza DEK has a flavor profile very close to that of an equivalent caffeinated blend. The water extraction preserves the aromatic compounds (oils, aldehydes, chlorogenic acids) while removing the caffeine — the notes of milk chocolate, roasted grains, and hazelnut are fully present in the cup. Some tasters perceive a slightly milder than a caffeinated blend (the bitterness of caffeine being eliminated), but the aromatic structure and body are preserved.

Lavazza offers decaffeinated coffee in several capsule systems:

The decaffeination process is identical (water extraction) — only the capsule system and format change depending on your machine.
