Usage & Compatibility
Limescale is the number one enemy of coffee machines. It gradually builds up in: the boiler, the circuits, the brewing unit, the steam nozzle, and the valves. Visible symptoms:
- Flow rate decreases — extraction becomes slower, the espresso comes out in drops.
- Unusual noises — the pump is working hard to maintain pressure.
- Metallic taste or chlorinated notes in the cup — the water is no longer being filtered properly.
- Message “descale” on the screen (Delonghi, Jura, Saeco automatic machines).
Regular descaling is essential to extend the life of your machine ( +30% to +50% depending on local water hardness) and maintain cup quality. Manufacturer's recommendation: every 3-4 months for normal household use , every 1-2 months in very hard water areas (Paris, Île-de-France, North, Alsace) or with intensive use .
descaler Cafemalin 250ml a universal, food -grade solution with an acidic formula (sulfamic or citric acid) effective against limescale deposits, compatible with the internal circuits of all modern espresso and capsule machines . Always follow manufacturer's instructions for the exact descaling procedure (dilution, duration, rinsing).
Compatibility: Universal — all espresso machines and food capsules

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I descale my machine?
The frequency depends on 3 factors :
- Local water hardness — Paris, Île-de-France, North, Alsace (very hard water 15-25 °f): every 1-2 months. Western Alsace, Brittany, Massif Central (soft water < 10 °f): every 4-6 months. Check the hardness on your water supplier's website.
- Usage intensity — 1-2 espressos/day = spaced frequency. 20+ espressos/day at the office = frequent frequency.
- Manufacturer recommendation — “descaling” indicator or screen message = to be followed systematically (Delonghi/Jura/Saeco automatic machines count the cycles).
General rule: ~every 3-4 months in normal household use. Machine with water filter (like Aqua Aroma Lavazza) = descaling frequency x 2 spaced out.
Is it compatible with my specific machine?
Yes, universal food-grade — compatible with all modern espresso machines and capsules:
- Capsule machines — Nespresso Original/Vertuo, Lavazza AMM/Blue/EP/Firma, Delta Q, illy Iperespresso, Dolce Gusto, Tassimo.
- Automatic grinder machines — Delonghi Magnifica/Dinamica/Eletta, Jura E/S/Z/ENA/GIGA, Krups Evidence/Intuition, Saeco Xelsis/Incanto, Bosch VeroBar, Melitta Barista.
- Manual espresso machines — Rancilio Silvia, Gaggia Classic Pro, Lelit, Sage Barista.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the exact dilution, cycle duration, and rinsing. Protocols vary—for example, Delonghi uses approximately one 100 mL dose diluted in 1 L of water, while Jura uses its own soluble tablets.
How many descaling treatments per 250 mL bottle?
Depending on the machine and the manufacturer's dilution, 2 to 4 descalings per 250 mL bottle:
- Household capsule machine (Nespresso, Lavazza AMM, Delta Q Mini Qool) — dilution ~50 mL / cycle = ~5 descalings / bottle.
- Automatic machine with medium grinder (Delonghi Magnifica, Krups Evidence) — dilution ~80-100 mL / cycle = ~2-3 descalings.
- Large capacity automatic machine (Jura GIGA, Saeco Xelsis) — dilution ~120 mL / cycle = ~2 descalings.
- Professional espresso machine (Rancilio Silvia + 2 L reservoir) — dilution ~150 mL = ~1-2 descalings.
Descaling protocol — general steps?
Always consult your machine's manual for the exact procedure. General steps:
- Dilute the descaler in water according to the manufacturer's instructions (generally 80-120 mL descaler + 1 L warm water in the tank).
- Start the descaling cycle from the machine menu (dedicated button or button combination). Caution: never drink the liquids coming out during the cycle.
- Pass ~50% of the liquid through the coffee circuit + ~50% through the steam/hot water circuit (to descale both).
- Leave to act for 15-30 minutes as per instructions (some machines pause automatically).
- Rinse thoroughly: empty the tank, fill with clean water, run 2-3 tanks of clean water through to remove all acidic residues.
The machine is ready for normal use. Never use "descaling" espresso as a beverage — the acidic residue can be irritating.
An alternative using white vinegar — does it work?
Technically yes, practically not recommended. White vinegar contains acetic acid which dissolves limescale — but:
- Residual odor — acetic acid leaves a persistent scent in the circuits, difficult to remove even after several rinses. The first 2-3 coffees after descaling with vinegar have an unpleasant acidic taste.
- Lower effectiveness — the sulfamic acid in the dedicated descaler is 4-5 times more effective against limescale at equal concentration.
- Not recommended by manufacturers — most Delonghi, Jura, Saeco manuals explicitly advise against vinegar (may void the warranty on some models).
dedicated descaler Cafemalin is more effective, faster and leaves no residual odor — the best option to preserve your machine and the quality in the cup.
Complementary to a water filter?
Yes, very complementary. The filter + descaler is the best protection against limescale buildup.
- Water filter (e.g., Aqua Aroma Lavazza LB300 , BRITA Purity C150 pro) — continuous preventative action . Slows down limescale buildup upstream.
- Descaler (this product) — periodic curative. Eliminates mineral residues that escape the filter.
Machine with filter + descaling every 3-4 months = lifespan ~4-5 years. Machine without filter or regular descaling in a hard environment = ~1-2 years before major breakdown.
